Chalk Pirate Flags
For this pirate theme we have been doing the Build Up Summer Learning Week 1 Pirate. We have loved doing pirates this summer and loved several of the books. Pirates are a theme I think do well for boys and girls.
We had a hard time picking a book this month. There was so many to choose from. What the girls ended up picking for the book was Pirates (Magic Tree House Research Guide, paper). Yes we read the non fiction book for the series. It was lots of fun. The part they liked best was the flags. We talked about how pirates did not live a good life and things were not all glorious.
The part they picked out from the book was about how the flags were different when they said there was just one pirate flag. We decide we would make flags.
What you need for this activity: bowl with water, white chalk and black card stock. (You can use other black paper I just like how well card stock holds up when applying wet chalk to it.)
First they dipped their chalk into the water. the reason is it paints differently wet than dry. This activity could be done with the water.
Each started working on their own flag. They all picked something different they were doing.
As we were going you did notice the difference between wet chalk and the dry chalk when they were coloring.

Here are a few Pirate books we will be look at. Yes there are a few other books in here:

I love the pirates theme and so does my class. I would love the book, Everything I Know About Pirates.
Those are some scary-looking pirate flags. I definitely wouldn’t bother those ships! 🙂
Flags turned out great!!
I love the pirate flags! My boys loved working on the summer week 1 printables and I think this would be a great way to extend the play and learning. Mt boys are under 8 so I would love the book for the younger crowd.
What great flags your girls made!
Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
What a great idea to mix the chalk with water to provide a different medium. My younger son doesn’t like the feeling of chalk on his hands but maybe he could be persuaded to try this!
What a simple, fun craft for pirate lovers!
