# Ocean Fish Rounding by Place Value

There are many different types of math that kids will learn. One of those types of math is rounding. You start simple with rounding and work up into different areas of place value for it.

Today I have a simple ocean fish rounding bye place value to work on three levels of rounding from the beginner to the more advanced.

All in a run ocean theme for kids to learn with.

The set has a lot of fun hands-on parts to it. You have an ocean themed rounding mat, 3 levels of fish and a 4 recording sheets.

The rounding mat has the number line graph for kids to help them know if the fish should round up or down. I love the fun ocean background on this one.

There are three levels of fish. I wanted to have different ages to be able to use some of the same printables. You can start with just the first set for beginners and work your way up to larger fish. There are 16 fish in each set. You can see the big number in the middle and the small number in the lower right corner to use with the recording sheets.

I recommend printing on white cardstock and laminating the cards and the mat if you plan on using them a lot.

There are 4 recording sheets: They go by rounding by ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. This allows different fish to be used in different ways. You can round the whole number or just parts of the number.

## How we used the Ocean Fish Rounding by Place Value printable

Here is a look at how I set up just and fish and the mat. You can see the numbers on the fish and the mat. I mix up the numbers so they just have fun.

You can see the fish on the mat and they give a good visual of rounding up and down with the fish in different places.

If you don’t want to use the mat but want to use it is a math center that kids can record you have 4 sheets to pick from. You can round by ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. You can see an example of how you can set the center up.

If you don’t plan on using the mat you could put the fish on 1 inch ring for the math center.

If kids are having a hard time with the idea of rounding and need some extra help. There is a Rounding Help Mat. This mat has several options but it shows a number line with a place for the areas to round. Plus you have help guides below for what rounds up and down. The light pink colored numbers round down and the blue colored numbers round up. It is a good visual for kids to use. It comes in this color version and a black and white version.
