If you could not guess by my blog’s names we love dinosaurs! We have always loved them. Years later we are always looking for ways to explore them.
We have even gone out of our way to go see dinosaur dig and dinosaur museums. This spring we went and saw some of the dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History and loved it!
My girls have always loved dinosaurs and I’m so happy at the first book we start on is Dinosaurs Before Dark for the Magic Tree House Chapter Book Club.
I know that there are loads of people that love dinosaurs and in the book Dinosaurs Before Dark (Magic Tree House, No. 1) you get to see and learn a few dinosaurs names. You can also learn more about dinosaurs in the Dinosaurs: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House 1: Dinosaurs Before Dark. I love having the fact books along with the story book.
We loved how Jack wrote done information about the dinosaurs as he went through the book. I thought why not have a fun spelling activity for spelling a few dinosaur names!
A few years ago I made this dinosaur bookmarks. They are great information and helpful for learning about some dinosaurs. There is a blank version and a filled-out version. We will be using these with our puzzles.
This set has seven dinosaur name puzzles: tyrannosaurus rex, stegosaurus, plesiosaurus, parasaurolophus, triceratops, brachiosaurus, and pteranodon. Each letter from the name is a piece of the puzzle. Here is a look at one of the dinosaur names. I will tell you I printed these on white cardstock and laminated the puzzles. It makes them last longer.
Another part of this set is a spelling mat! A place they can place the pieces of their puzzle and it helps them see that they have all the pieces. I laminated our mat. Then I put a line of putty on it to help the puzzle pieces stick.
How to use these Dinosaur Name Puzzles
I took all the laminated puzzles pieces and put them in a rice sensory bin all standing up! It was a blast to do. I put about 1 inch of rice in the bin so they would have enough rice around all the pieces to stand up.
Here is a look at who I set up the area for her to work on the dinosaur puzzle names. You can see the puzzles in the bin, the spelling mat, a dry erase marker, and the dinosaur information bookmarks.
You have them pick a dinosaur from the bookmarks. Then have them pick out the pieces of the puzzle form the puzzle sensory bin. The dinosaur colors match the bookmarks.
Then you have them put the dinosaur name together. They have the bookmarks to help with spelling and loads of letters to work with. The putty at the top helps keep the puzzles from sliding around as you build the words.
After the puzzle is put together we wrote out the dinosaur name with a dry erase marker.
Now you go have fun and complete the rest of the puzzles in the bin. This is a fun and different way to work on spelling, writing and dinosaur names.
Now if you don’t want to write the names on the spelling mat there are two recording sheets. One has a blank space for kids to write the name and then the second one has a tracing for the names.
Since we are starting something totally new I thought it would be fun to add a few bookmarks for those working on reading chapter books. There are three bookmarks for kids to use. You have one for little chapter books that have 10 or fewer chapters. I believe a lot of the starting Magic Tree House books have around ten chapters.
Then there is a set for books that have up to 20 chapters. But because I know not everyone else as a chapter there is a bookmark you can write the page number on. These are all fun ways to add to the reading. Keep an eye out for more bookmarks that match up to Magic Tree House Themes.
