Hands-on Learning With Summer Themed Spelling Puzzles

Puzzles have been our favorite way to do spelling for a few years. I love that they can be so flexible in how kids learn.

They can make spelling a hands-on activity as well as writing. You can just do the puzzles and enjoy learning the spelling of the words.

These puzzles are great because they are all summer themed words. I asked what words people used more for summer and these were a few of them.

The puzzles have the words: sunglasses, pool, sprinkler, hose, popsicle, flip flops, sun, sunscreen, swimsuit, swim shorts.

Each of the pieces of the puzzles has one letter from the word. This allows you to spell the words out.

There is a mat you can use to build your puzzles on. All the puzzles will fit on it. Plus there is a space you can write out your word on after you have made the puzzle. We put our pages in a sheet protector. That way I can store all the puzzle pieces and mat together.

I recommend laminating the puzzles and the mat to help them last longer.

How We use these puzzles

There are 10 puzzles in this set. So it makes it easy to work on just these words. I have them do the puzzles on the mat the first time through. Then they write the word on the mat.

Now if you want to change it the writing. You pull out the lacing letters and have them build the word instead of writing the word.

If you want to do more after you finish the mat you can have them trace the word on the matching recording sheet. This sheet has all 10 words in the set.

Now if you want them to write the word you can. There is a page for writing the words in. You can have them do the puzzle and then write the word on the sheet.

A fun follow up activity to the spelling would be to do a writing activity with the words that kids built.
