At the age of 4 my youngest is not always interested in stamping a word over and over. I enjoy coming up with new ways to make the words so that she has fun.

What you need: pencil, stickers, Appletters or Bananagrams, abc stamps and Bob Books, Set 1: Beginning Readers.

I always cut up the pages so she only has one word at a time. An older child might be able to do many words at the same time. But having just one word to work on makes it easier. To start with we just read the word on the paper and then she traces the word.

After she has doing the writing of the word we do several different types for the stamping. We don’t always stamp the word. The first time we start with just using Appletters or Bananagrams. I will give her several letters to pick from to make the correct word.

The next round of working on this would be to do some stamping. We always start with making sure the stamps are in the right order. Then she stamps the word. I have them place a find between each word to make sure there is a space from the start to the end of the word.

We also use ABC stickers for making the words. I get most of my ABC stickers from the Target Dollar section. During the summer and the start of the school season they have lots of different ABC stickers. She makes her words from the stickers.

Some times we put all three activities together at the same time.

One activity that we do that is fun is to print all the words on one page for each book. This is done as a review at the end of reading the book several times. As you read the book you write a tally marker for that word. This is fun and keeps the kids look for the words and teaches them tally marking.
