Counting Roses – Hands On Learning

Counting Roses - Hands On Learning -

We have been doing a lot of counting. A book we have been reading lately is the There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose!. I have a daughter named Rose. So this is always fun when reading. My youngest has been working on her counting. We have been doing some of the Valentines Pack. The pack is themed after the book. A fun extension of the book was the count some roses!

What you need: Numbers 1 to 10 (we used foam heart shapes), fake roses, and a vase.

First thing we did was look at the number on the hearts and say the number.

Then she would count the roses as she put them in the vase.

She did all the numbers from 1 to 10.

Every time that she finished she would count the roses in the vase and then say done! We celebrated every time she got it right. We also talked about the times she might have had one extra. I would say “you needed 5. We counted 6. How many extra did you have?” She would answer 1. I would say “What is 6 minus 1?”. Fun and simple ways to teach some math as well.

I put the numbers on the floor and had her put them in order.

We then put a rose on each number and counted them. When we started she tried to bunch them up to match each number. I asked if we had enough flowers and she said no, but she wanted to try anyways. We talked about 1 + 2 +3 + 4 = 10.

What age is your daughter who you did this activity with vs the age of daughter you did the “Adding Roses”? I’m trying to get a feel where I should begin with my 3.5 year old. She can count fairly well, but could still use reinforcing, so is it too early to start trying the addition?

My youngest did the counting roses right before her 4th birthday and my middle did the adding when she was 6. I hope this helps! I love doing counting activities and I still do them with my youngest who is about to turn 5.
