Hands-On Learning With Blends Playdough Mats!

Playdough mats have always been one of our favorite ways to do hands-on learning. They work on so many skills while you use them.

Today I have some blends playdough mats that focus on the two letters of some beginning sound blends. These are fun and great for kids just starting out learning about the blend sounds.

What is a blend?

A blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but the letters in blends all make a separate sound.

Bl would be an example of the consonant blend. So the word blender has the blend of bl.

You sound out b and l sounds in the word.

Beginning blend examples are: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tr.

These Blends playdough mat printables work on beginning blends for kids.

I like having something I can use over and over while working on learning. We use these playdough mats with the series Meet the Phonics – Blends. It has the sounds and is a great way for kids to work on their sounds with words and matching mats for the videos.

Each of the blends mats has a blend in big font size for kids to see with two matching images for each blend on the side. The pictures have the matching word written out for them to see. This is a great way to see the blend in the word.

These are easy ways to introduce the blends to kids. I put the blends playdough mat in a sheet protector but you can laminate them if you plan on using them a lot.

Another fun idea we have done with the mats is sorting lacing letters to fill the playdough area. This is easy to do and works on learning the letters that make the blends.

    1. I’m glad you are using it right now. We are working on that as well! So just seems to fit our needs. They are lots of fun to do!

    1. Thank you so much for sharing this! It is a lot of fun to use and make them! My girls have totally enjoyed these!

  2. Thank you, I have one who needs a little more work on blends. I do have a question for you. We have most of the PreSchool Prep movies and love them but I haven’t heard very positive review of the blends. Do you think they are worth the $? Someone mentioned that some of the blends were mispronounced, have you noticed that?

    1. Instead of the dr it does have an “a” in it. So it sounds more like drah but when they do the blend with the whole word they work it out. My 3 year old knows her blends and does them correct with words. It got her doing some of her speech better. No video is 100%. I always make sure to use words and other things outside of the video to make sure the sounds are correct. It was one of the reasons to make the playdough mats.

The video also helped my 7 year old finally read her blends better. She has struggled with it for some time. I like to use them but not rely on them 100%.

  3. What a fun, interactive way for practicing blends in a hands on way! LOVE it!

Thanks for linking up to TGIF! I always look forward to your link-ups! I am buffering this to share this week

    Have a great weekend,
    Beth =)
