Shapes are fun to work on. I love having hands-on ideas for shapes. It makes it so much fun to learn with them. After we have the shape coloring pages the playdough mats where the next step. These give you a hands-on shape learning center that can be used over and over.
I love that playdough mats help build fine motor skills while learning. Plus it is almost like playing making the playdough snakes for the mats.
These are simple and easy to set up and use. Each mat has one shape with two lines around for kids to use for the playdough area.
They are simple with just the shape word, shape in the middle, and a small image of the shape as well. I like to either laminate the pages or put them in sheet protectors
. If you are going to use them often printing them on cardstock helps as well.

Things to use with the Shape Playdough Mats
There are just a few of the items we used with these playdough mats.
- printer
- copy paper
- white cardstock
- playdough
- sheet protectors
- laminator
- laminating pouches
- dry erase markers
- Wild About Animals Jungle Counters
How we used the shape playdough mat for hands-on learning
The most basic way is with playdough! I love watching my girls make the playdough snakes. It is fun to see how they fill the space. I store the mats in sheet protectors
to make it easy for me to switch out the mat we are working on.

If you want to try some tracing you can have kids trace between the lines. I have it in a sheet protector and have them trace with dry erase markers. It makes it a great fine motor activity for them to do.

Another way is to use objects to outline the shape. We use the Wild About Animals Jungle Counters. They are great size for doing this activity and any of the couners would work.

Here are some things we plan on using this these shape playdough mats.

I was a little disappointed in trying to download these – there’s an ad to the right with a big green button that says “Download” – my kids are going crazy around me, so of course being distracted I clicked it and now my Firefox is all messed up! Not your fault, but do you have control over the ads on your blog?
Sorry I don’t have any control over the ads that are displayed and every person sees something different.
Sure appreciate getting these—they just might help our youngest “get” shapes, finally!

Love these! Thank you so much! What an awesome website you have. I am trying to get your awesome shape mats to a little smaller size but they are password locked when I try to open them in Photoshop and I wondered if you would give me the password so I can shrink the cards down to fit 4 on a page? For my personal use only of course. Thanks again for making fun things for our children!
Sorry I wont give out the passwords for any of the printables. They are locked for a reason and because of the terms of use for the images I use. You can print them 4 per page in Adobe Reader. You can see an example here of how to print more than one page at a time: https://3dinosaurs.com/wordpress/index.php/traveling-word-wall/
