Exploring Nature at Walden Pond – Free Nature Journal

If you read my introduction this month, the book we picked would not surprise you. We went with a book about Walden Pond. The great outdoors is something we have talked about a lot these last few weeks. We are getting ready for our summer of enjoying the outdoors as much as we can.

The book we read was If You Spent a Day with Thoreau at Walden Pond (Christy Ottaviano Books). This is a book about learning how Thoreau spent his days and how simple his life was. I like that this books makes you think about what you are doing.

One part to know about this trip is that we really did look at nature in the great outdoors and why it is important for us to get out. I love the outdoors and it was a part of my childhood and I want it for theirs. On this trip we look a look at the animals and the plants that we could see.

This was a great to do activities that help kids connect with nature.

Another part of this trip was watching how different the water is on all side of Walden Pond. We watched how calm the water was on each side of the pond as we hiked around. We noted on the map where the wave on the pond were rough and smooth and what was different about it. We also noted if there was any wind at that time.

After we finished up our trip we came out and worked on some nature journals. Rose worked on the animals first and then went to everything else. She likes keeping track of all of them that we see.

  1. Wow, we must live super close to you! We are in the metro west area too (we just moved here this year), and it is a treat for me to have all your activity ideas and book recommendations since they are so relevant to the same things we are doing. We love Walden Pond, but the Thoreau book is new to me and I can’t wait to check it out and take the kids back to the pond!

      1. I’ve seen them! It has been great to get a feel for some of the activities in the area and to see how your kids have liked them. We’re going on our own trip the Minute Man Historical Park this week as we’re learning about the 4th of July. How old are your kids, btw? I have felt like some of the books you recommend are a little hard/long for my kids (2 and 4), but some of the printables are a bit too easy for my 4 year old (or maybe I’m accidentally tiger-momming her). Also, we are LDS too.

        1. Actually, let me amend that. This pregnancy must be affecting my mind, because that was a ridiculous thing to say. A huge number of the worksheets are beyond my four-year-old, particularly in the writing department. She’s pretty spot on with the math and ready to move into addition and subtraction, but she is certainly not writing essays about George Washington!

          1. I try to give a range of activities for kids. My girls are 4, 6, 8. Some times I create things we want to do later. 🙂

  2. What a great journal for kids! I really like how intentional they had to be in their observations. I had not heard of this book before but its one that I think we will enjoy. Thanks for helping to host!

  3. Walden Pond looks like the perfect place to observe and enjoy nature. Thanks for the journals, these are going to come in handy this summer!

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
