Once you progress from simple counting, you head to addition and subtraction. Some kids get the idea right away, and others don’t. These free Thanksgiving addition and subtraction mats<\/strong> give kids a hands-on way to work on their math.<\/p>\n

I always want to change up our learning. These mats have been helpful for my youngest to work on her addition and subtraction. She enjoys learning and the changes of themes during the month. Plus you have several options for the counting objects. They are a great addition to the 31 days of printables<\/a> for October this year!<\/p>\n

Each of my girls has learned addition facts differently. My youngest has been learning a lot about ten frames and how many works with them. It has been fun to create some printables for her to use.<\/p>\n

Each of the mats has two ten frames for doing some hands-on math. Plus an area to put the thanksgiving food items on with the total number of items to add or subtract.<\/p>\n

I have different types of counting items to go with this set. There is turkey, pumpkin, corn for putting on the table and the 10 frames. I don’t use those as much as I do other hands-on items around the house. <\/p>\n

I used unifix cubes<\/a>\"\" and pumpkins<\/a>\"\". We have used glass gems as well at times. <\/p>\n

I put the page in a sheet protectors<\/a>\"\". I have addition on one side and subtraction on the other side. This allows me to switch between the two and easy to store that way as well. I use dry erase markers on the numbers, but you have the option of cutting out the numbers in the set as well.<\/p>\n

There is a fun cornucopia spinner with the set. You use a paperclip and pencil to make the spinner. This gives kids something fun when using the mats. <\/p>\n

When we use this on the subtraction mat, we use the bigger of the two numbers of our spins for the first number in our equation. I make sure they understand which number spun is larger. <\/p>\n

But if you want to change it up you can always use dice instead. Kids love changes in learning. <\/p>\n
