<\/div>\nWhat is a digraph?<\/h2>\n
A digraph is two letters together that make one sound. Digraphs can be made up of vowels or consonants.<\/p>\n
Some examples of consonant digraphs would be ch-, -ch, -ck, gh, kn-, ph, qu-, sh-, -sh, th-, -th, wh-, and wr-.<\/p>\n
You will find a collection of consonant digraphs for kids to use.<\/p>\n
What consonant digraphs should I teach first?<\/h2>\n
You often start learning digraphs it is in easily decodable words. You start with short vowel endings like “IP”.<\/p>\n
So you would make digraph words like chip and ship. They can decode the word ending and you can teach them the digraphs sound at the start.<\/p>\n
Most often, you start with teaching ch, sh, th, and wh first. They will find words they know, like chair, ship, and thumb, that work great for teaching the digraphs.<\/p>\n
You can start teaching digraphs in kindergarten (ages 5 to 6), and then you learn more in first grade (ages 6 to 7).<\/p>\n
