\n<\/div>\nWhat is a Diphthong?<\/h2>\n
A diphthong is a sound formed by combining two vowels in a single syllable. The sound begins as one vowel sound and moves towards another. Diphthong comes from the Greek language meaning two voices or two sounds.<\/p>\n
These are words like boy, coin, cloud, and cow.<\/p>\n
The common diphthongs are: au, -aw, -ew, -oi, -oo, -ou, -ow, -oy.<\/p>\n
The sound that diphthongs words make is a long vowel sound. You will often teach the sounds that are similar at the same time. You would teach the following diphthongs together: oy and oi and ow and ou.<\/p>\n
As I said before these are normally taught in second grade or later because of how complicated they are. And there is no wrong or right way to teach them.<\/p>\n
