What is a Diphthong?<\/h2>\n

A diphthong is a sound formed by combining two vowels in a single syllable. The sound begins as one vowel sound and moves towards another. Diphthong comes from the Greek language meaning two voices or two sounds.<\/p>\n

These are words like boy, coin, cloud, and cow<\/p>\n

The common diphthongs are: au, -aw, -ew, -oi, -oo, -ou, -ow, -oy.<\/p>\n

The sound that diphthongs words make is a long vowel sound. You will often teach the sounds that are similar at the same time. You would teach the following diphthongs together: oy and oi and ow and ou.<\/p>\n

These diphthong matching puzzles have three piece for kids to match. You have the diphthongs vowel and then two matching words with pictures. <\/p>\n

    You can see a simple set up for learning center. You can mix all the diphthong puzzles together or you can sort some of them on different sides.<\/p>\n

    You can see the match of the puzzle below. After you have the puzzle matched say the two words and they can point out the diphthong vowels.<\/p>\n

    You can make this a fun learning center with rings. You punch holes in the corners and then use the rings to flip through the cards to find the matching puzzles.<\/p>\n

    You can also pull out the Blank writing Paper<\/a> and write the diphthong words on the puzzle. It is super simple and easy to do. The pictures have the words below them. <\/p>\n
