Subitizing is the ability to recognize a small group of objects without counting. This would be with dots, dice, and tally marks as examples of groups of objects. Subitizing is part of the development of number sense.<\/p>\n

The Goldilocks & Porridge number matching activity has tally marks, dominos, ten frames, and tens and dice.<\/p>\n
I recommend printing on cardstock and laminating so you can use these repeatedly.<\/p>\n
These area a great way to work on matching different types of ways that match the numbers. You might have kids that are great at dice, but not at ten frames. And this put all those different types of numbers together.<\/p>\n
Kids will work on matching the ten frame that mean 7 with the number seven on the table. This can be don with all the different cards and number sense themes.<\/p>\n

You have number sorting mats. These have a table, Goldilocks and the number on the mats. This gives you an area to sort the bowls of porridge. You have number digits for the numbers on the cards.<\/p>\n

You have the numbers you are going to work on. You have the cards to sort. <\/p>\n You can start with all the cards to sort or just a few of them. You can set it up for the ones that work best for your learning.<\/p>\n You can see below how you can sort all four cards below. You can ask them about why each of the numbers were correct. And it is a fun way to look at how each of the cards matches the number.<\/p>\n This is a simple center activity that can be done over and over in learning groups.<\/p>\n You can also simplify this activity by giving them just one porridge to sort. This allows kids to see how each numbers is different and it works great for kids.<\/p>\n You can do this each day with different numbers. And then do the activity above with all the numbers.<\/p>\n You can also work on putting numbers in order. You can do this for the tables and the porridge. You can do it for all 4 of the porridges.
