There are some math concepts that are so hard to understand. I know that the idea of even and odd is one of those odd math problems.
I have kids that always learn better when they have a math aide. This is the newest math help mat on I have made.
On each side of the mat, the numbers are sorted by what is even and what is odd. It is an easy way to look and see what is type each number is. They color in a color version and a black and white. There are two mats options for kids to use.
The first version has the numbers on the side and a ten frame in the middle with numbers 1 to 10 shown.

The second version just has the numbers on the side and the blank ten frame in the middle.

I recommend printing in cardstock. We have ours in sheet protectors
so that we can pull out the help mat we need when we need it. We have ours stored in a mat binder.
How we have used these mats
There are many ways to use these mats. But I love using these to teach the idea of even and odd. We start out by using the mat with the numbers in the middle.
Here is a look at how I set up the mat. I give them 10 unifix cubes and one 10-sided dice. Our die happens to come from the place value dice
set.

Have kids start by rolling the dice and looking at the number they got.

They fill in the numbers in the middle on the ten frame to match the number 4. You can see that there is the same on each side. By having the same amount you explain that is even. They can circle the number on the side of the mat as well.

You can see an example of how odd looks on the mat. This is an easy way for kids to see what odd and even look like.

You can use these to help with different activities for even and odd. We used it with the firefly sorting recently. It was a great help when you need a visual look at the number.

Don’t feel that you have to limit yourself to just the white, because there are also in black and white you can use colored cardstock for those that like the color paper better than white paper. I love printing these off in my girls’ favorite colors to use.
