Model Magic Planets

With the first look at Pluto this last week we had some fun learning about the planets. I thought it was a great time to do a project and make some of the planets for ourselves. We like doing craft projects with model magic. This was a great addition to our space week.

We read the bookHow Many Planets Circle the Sun?: And Other Questions about Our Solar System (Good Question!). I really like the pictures and details in the book. I also like it talked about how we would be getting to Pluto soon and that happened this last week.

What you need for this activity: 2-Inch styrofoam balls and model magic (Note: we used several different bags of it).

Each of them picked out different planets they wanted to do. One of the of my favorite parts of using model magic is that they can be as creative as they want. They looked through the books to pick their planets.

Model magic makes for a great fine motor activity. They get to push the model magic onto the balls.

When they finished a planet, they would roll it around on the table to smooth it out.

They each made different planets and had fun with each one. Some of the planets got made more than once. For example, Pluto got made twice. We also compared our Plutos to the new photos.

This is a great hands-on way of learning about the planets. It’s so much easier to remember them once you’ve “created” them! 😉
