Planet & Spaceship Place Value Sorting
Space has always been one of my favorite themes! I love doing activities with it and getting kids to learn with it.
One learning area we have been struggling with has been place value. Plus it is one math that I always have requests for. You can start learning place value early and build on that place value as you go up in grades.
Today I have a printable on learning about place value of numbers with a free sorting of planets and spaceships!
Place value has so many themes for people to learn about. You start with learning about tens and one place value. Then you work up to bigger numbers.
Place value is about learning what the place value of where a number is in the order of numbers.
You have the number 21. You learn that the 2 is in the tens place and the 1 is in the ones place. This is the start and work up to larger and larger numbers.
Today’s printable works on several levels of place value. This allows you to start with the set in first grade and work on place value numbers through fourth grade.
There are 9 different planets all with the name of the place value on them. You can see the nine planets below. I printed them on cardstock
There are 4 levels of cards for kids to learn with. You have one to tens, ones to hundreds, ones to thousands, and ones to hundred millions. This allows for various levels so learning of part of place value. It can be one you start using in the first grade and grows with kids through fourth grade.

Things you can use with this printable
How to use these Place Value Printables
The first thing to know is to use the level of cards you are at! You don’t want to use all the numbers on the cards with kids. They can get overwhelmed.
You can see an example of how I set up the cards to use them. I use the place value names that match the number on the cards.
Then have them sort the cards by the place value of the number that is underlined. You could have them say the number while they are sorting as well.
After they are done sorting you can look at the cards and see how they did. You can see here that all the number underlined in the tens are sorting under the tens and the ones are sorted under the ones.
There is a higher level of the cards. This set has all the numbers from one to hundred millions. These are great for older kids. The numbers all have up to a hundred million on them. You can practice saying the place value names and sorting. These are great for practice saying big numbers as well.
Here are some other ideas not shown:
-You can have them say the whole number outline. it works great on seeing the numbers and how you say the numbers.
-Say the place value number on the card. So if the card says 4,561 and the 5 is underlined. They say the value is 500.
-You can work on rounding. You have them round to the number that is underlined.
-Have kids write the expanded form of the number. So the number is 45. You have them write expanded form like 40 + 5.
-You can work on addition. You have kids pick two numbers at their level and add them together.
-You can also do subtraction. They pick two cards and have the bigger card subtract the smaller card.
