What is a blend?
A blend is when two or more consonants are blended together, but the letters in blends all make a separate sound.
Bl would be an example of the consonant blend. So the word blender has the blend of bl.
You sound out b and l sounds in the word.
Beginning blend examples are: bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, tr.

Ways to Use the Blends Matching Cards
You are going to see a few different ways to use the blends matching cards.
Preparing the Blends Marching Cards
The blend matching cards are great printed on cardstock and laminated. This helps the blend cards last longer in learning centers.
You can just print them on cardstock is that is all you have.
Match the Blends in a Pocket Chart
I love having different ways to use the cards. One of my favorite items has been a pocket chart. I had forgotten we had a tabletop pocket chart one until I found it again in a box. It is super easy to use and set up. You can put the picture or the word on one side and have them match the other. It is easy to have them work on a few blends at at time this way.
Work On One Beginning Blend at a Time
You can pull out one type of blend and have kids work on it. I pulled out all the blends that have an “r” in them and had them match the cards. It is simple and easy to do.
You can have them match face up or face down. If kids are just starting you can write in pencil on the back the blend for each card.
Match the Beginning Blends on a Ring
If you want a quick way to do matching but don’t want to set it up then have the kids flip through the cards on rings. Then they can flip through the cards and find the match.
You can do all the blends this way or just some of the blends your kids are learning.
