We have been doing some small activities with space. Today we learned about galaxies. There are many different types of galaxies out there. They come in 5 different types. We had fun learning about them and doing this galaxy painting.
We read the book Galaxies, Galaxies!. it has lots of information about galaxies for you to learn about. I really like Gail Gibbons books. She does a great job with them.
This talks about the start of where we learned about galaxies and how people learned about them in different times. I love how the book progresses about how you learn about galaxies.
What you need for this activity: black construction paper and colored oil pastel sticks
.
First they picked what one what galaxy types they wanted to make. They looked at the book to see what one they wanted to try. They had the 5 types in the book.
We used the oil pastels to make our galaxies stand out on the black paper. They made their galaxies and added stars around them.
After they finished we compared their pictures to the types in the book that they had created.
We had tons of fun making galaxies! It is easy and fun to do and works for various ages of kids. Here is a look at our final picture:

Looks like fun! One of my girls is really interested in space, and loves to draw. We’ve never had pastels here, so I think I have to get my hands on some, plus the book you mention. Thanks for the idea!
