I love seasonal activities. It is fun to have changes in my house and plus it is great for kids to have fun things to do.
Today I have a great heart painting activity. It is a bit of a mix medium art project and we love these. They are super simple and easy to do and great for Valentine’s Day!
Plus a great art process activity they can be creative with.

Several years ago we read the book Snowy Valentine.
I always love the book and how they made a heart in the snow. And I thought we would have some fun coloring and finding white hearts with our heart painting with oil pastels and watercolors!
What you need for this Heart Painting Activity
- watercolor paper
- watercolors
- white oil pastel
- heart punch 1.5 inch
- white cardstock
(PS you can use color cardstock
to make the template standout more if you want.)
- scissors

How to make the Heart Painting with Oil Pastels and Watercolors
The first step is making the heart template. I used a heart punch 1.5 inch for this. I punched out a few hearts on the cardstock and then cut them out in squares to use.

You take the heart template that was made and then place in on the watercolor paper. I like the watercolor paper because it gives the painting texture and does well with lots of water on it.
You hold the template down and color inside the heart with the white oil pastel. You repeat this process over and over on the paper until you have all the hearts you want.
You could also use the heart shape from the punch to color the outline of it

The final step is to use watercolors to color the whole paper. You can do this however you want. As you color the paper the hearts are revealed. I let them decide how they wanted to do this. They had full control over what they did.
