Turtle Themed R-Controlled Vowel Sorting

We just love turtles at my house. I know my girls would love a turtle is I would let them. We have been working on r-controlled vowels. So I thought we would do a turtle pet theme for a fun activity.

Hands-on sorting and recognizing sounds is a fun way to learn. Today’s turtle r-controlled vowel sorting printable works great for this.

This set is made so that kids can have fun sorting the turtle and learning r-controlled words.

There are 5 tanks and each has an r-controlled vowel on it. It is easy to see the r-controlled vowel that you are sorting. Plus big enough to put on both cards that match it.

Each tank has two matching cards with a picture that has an r-controlled word. Each work should be easy to figure out where it belongs.

How we use this printable

Here is a look at how we set up the sorting mats. We have the turtles on one side and the tanks on the other side. It is simple and easy and this works great for learning to read centers.

Pick up the card and say the word. You can talk about what correct r-controlled vowel sound it makes.

After you have said the name and figured out what vowel sound it has, you sort it to the correct mat.

You can also play a simple matching game with the cards. It is easy to set up and play.

There is a recording sheet you can use once you have all the matches done. It has space for the two words and a place to write a sentence with one of the words. If your kids are creative try and see if they can use two words in a sentence.
