For this months activity for Where in the World, we did some world map learning. We read two books with this the first is Maps and Globes (Reading Rainbow Books)and the second was a book called Follow That Map!: A First Book of Mapping Skills (Exploring Our Community)
.
To start this off is a FREE Printable Mini World Pack!
This is a very mini pack with lots of things you can do with it. This really is a mini pack. There is no tot pack with this one. This is a simple and easy set to learn the 7 continents as they match up to the map of the Earth map in the pack. I wanted to do a lot with this but ran out of time to get it all done. This does match up very nicely with the theme of the month plus is a great way to learn about the Earth. You can see below how we used this pack with the book: Maps and Globes (Reading Rainbow Books)>.
What you need for the Map & Globe Activities

How we Use the World Pack and Activities
Follow That Map!: A First Book of Mapping Skills (Exploring Our Community). It was perfect learning for Mary. She got to find things on the keys and follow simple directions on the page. It was loads of fun and taught her about lots of map skills. She liked looking for north, south, east, and west. If you are looking for a simple book about maps that is hands-on learning for younger kids this would be perfect.

We read Maps and Globes (Reading Rainbow Book) and did a few map activities while we read the book.
The first activity that we did was make a clay type map with playdough. Each of them got to add their own part to the map. Each had their idea of what should be on the map and was important.

We talked a lot about the world map and globes and flat maps. We colored a flat map of the world. We color the oceans blue and then the 7 continents. Then we marked north, south, east, and west. My youngest used the from the Melissa & Doug Jumbo ABC Wooden Chunky Puzzle (26 pcs). The older two made their own compass on the page.

The last activity we did with the book was to learn about different types of maps and how they can be marked. We look at the South America map and used that as a guide to color our maps.

Mini World Pack contains 45 pages:
3 Part Cards, Size Sequencing, Size Sorting, Write a Sentence, Trace & Color, Blank Maps to color and label, 10 Piece Puzzle, Wall Cards, Trace Begging Sounds, Trace the Word, Write the Word, Beinnging Sounds.
Here are some Where Are We books that you can check out. Yes, there are some older books in this list.

We really enjoyed Follow That Map book too when daughter was younger! Great pack too!
Mary loved it! We have read it a few times now.
Wow, thanks for such an amazing resource! Although I am slightly amused that New Zealand seems to be part of Australia on your map, we are a separate country 🙂
I didn’t mean that to come across as a bad thing though- just saw there is an Oceania label on there! I love living Down Under but would love to come to America one day.
I was going to 7 continents and the images I have.
Thank you for sharing these! It is great to have map studies geared to the younger set.
This will go along great with what we have been working on here. Thanks for sharing!!
