What is a sensory bin?
A sensory bin is typically a plastic tub or container filled with carefully selected materials and objects to stimulate the senses of children in preschool.
Sensory bins might have rice, water beads, corn, beans, or other types filled with small items.
Pirate Sensory Bin
The pirate sensory bin is great for a pirate theme or talk like a pirate day. You have different pirate themes mixed in with different coins. A great sensory bin for preschool (ages 3 to 4), prek (ages 4 to 5) and kindergarten (ages 5 to 6).
You have rice as the filler for the sensory bin.
Pirate Books to Read with the Sensory Bin
There Was an Old Pirate Who Swallowed a Fish is a fun sequencing book with a pirate theme. These are fun to red with kids’.
You could also read There Was an Old Pirate Who Swallowed a Map! We love the books in this series and they are always fun for each theme we do with them.

Ways to Use the Pirate Sensory Bin
You will see a few ways to use the pirate sensory bin. But remember play is the most important part of the sensory bin. After you finish the sensory try this fun pirate porthole craft!
Play in the Pirate Sensory Bin
As always I let them just play with the pirate sensory bin. It is fun to see what they will do and how they adapt play from older sensory bins to the current one. And sensory bins can just be free play and kids will love it.
Sorting Pirate & Pirate Items
We sorted the pirates and their items. We talked about the different items in the pirates have. Their favorite was the ship.
You can use the pirate pack to help with vocab words as well.
Look at the Different Coins in the Sensory Bin
Once we had all the pirates and their items out we looked at the coins. They sorted out some of the coins and talked about their names. We looked at quarters and pennies this time.
You can ask them to give you certain coins as well. We looked for each type of coin on the sensory bins.
Remember to Just Play in the Pirate Sensory Bin
Don’t forget that the most important part of a sensory bin is just letting them play. The girls liked to pour coins and rice from hands to hands to the bin. As always I love to keep bins around for a week so I can see how they play with each item. You can dig through and play in the sensory bin and it is fun.

This looks like so much fun to explore. What wonderful treasures you filled the bin with.
It has been a week full of fun for us! We love having sensory bins around!
Oh what a fabulous idea for a sensory bin! I’m pinning this to remind me about it later. #supermommyclub
Love the idea of adding the coins. I am doing something similar, added a couple of pirate shaped copper banks to put coins into, lots of red, blue, and clear “diamond” gems, a parrot pill box, seashells, and other things for them to dig with and sort. This theme is turning out so fun for the summer. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
If I could have found where the girls put my gems I would have put them in, but I could not find them before the post. I’m sure they will resurface at some time.
My kids love pirates and pirate books, so this is right up their alley!
Thanks for linking up with The Thoughtful Spot!
What a fun sensory bin theme!
