So what is pre-writing?
I remember the first time I heard the word pre-writing in school. My first thought was writing a paper or starting a paper.
But for young kids, pre-writing is the skill to build to work up to writing letters and other types of writing. It also teaches the direction that we read.
You can start a lot of those skills with fine motor activities with playdough and other small motor movements. But a lot of those skills are working up to prewriting with lines. Then working on more fine motor skills that help to do better with writing and reading later in life.
You start out with thick prewriting lines and work to thinner prewriting lines. Then to prewriting patterns that work into writing letters.
School Pre-Writing Printables
The school prewriting printable works on fine dashed lines for kids to trace. You have 14 different lines of prewriting with each line type on its own page. You have three colors of pencils for the start and stop of the prewriting.
You trace the prewriting lines from the same color pencil to the same color pencil on the other side. A great visual for kids to make sure they are tracing the same line.
These school prewriting printables are great for kids in preschool (ages 3 to 4), PreK (ages 4 to 5), and kindergarten (ages 5 to 6).

Ways to Use the School Prewriting Printable
You will see several ideas below that are not just tracing the prewriting lines. And some of these ideas can help you develop skills to help kids with prewriting.
Using a Pencil Grip with the School Prewriting Printable
If you are just switching from thick lines to thin lines and using a small pencil for the first time a pencil grips is great for kids to use.
It provides extra support when kids might need it.
Trace the Prewriting Lines with You Finger
If you want to use the prewriting printable but a pencil is not the best idea. Try having kids point with their finger and trace the lines that way. You can start on the simple lines and work up to the more complex lines.
Trace the Prewriting School Printable
If you are ready to trace the prewriting lines, give them a fun challenge to trace the lines with markers or crayons matching the color of the pencil.
You get a little color matching and fine motor work simultaneously!
Reuse the School Prewriting Worksheet
If you love the prewriting worksheet but want to use it over and over. Then laminate the page or put it in a sheet protector. This is a great way to use the page.
And you can use dry erase markers on it over and over!
Use Playdough on the School Prewriting Printable
If you are not ready to use the school pre-writing printable, you can use playdough on the lines. It is a great way to change up using the same printable.

Use Mini Erasers on the School Prewriting Lines

It is a simple way to get fine motor work in while using the prewriting lines.

If you want to change this up after you have traced the prewriting lines, you can cut the lines. It is another way to get a second use of the prewriting printable.
You could do this with any of the prewriting printables on the site.
Trace the School Prewriting Lines with Watercolors
If you are up for a challenge with the prewriting lines. Then change it up by using watercolor pencils on the lines. Tracing the lines with a paintbrush changes up the fine motor skills that you are using and is great for kids who need more work but don’t like tracing the lines with a pencil.
