Place value is taught many different ways and at different ages. I love using place value mats to help with math. It is an easy way for those visual and hands-on learners to see how it works.
I wanted to have something simple we could use in many different ways. Today I have the free place value mats and cards for you to grab.
These are great for learning place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as well.
Each of these mats is really simple they have space for 9 spots and in a column. I wanted to work with something that showed just 9 columns so that it would be easy to see that if you had more than 9 spaces you can move it to the next place value.
I recommend laminating the sheets to help them last longer. I wanted something that would fit a unifix cubes
in nicely.
They have three place value per sheet. You will find place value sheets for ten, ones, hundreds, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, million, ten million, hundred million, billion, ten billion, hundred billion, tenths, hundredths, thousandths
The cards have two different types of cards. They have numbers 0 to 9 for each place value. You have the cards are in expanded form and the unit form for the numbers. Why not ten spots in a column? Because if you have enough for 10 you move it as 1 to the place value.
Ways to use these place value mats and cards
There are so many ways to use these but today I wanted to show you how we used these to build numbers. You can keep the pages together or cut them up to make a big mat.
I love using unifix cubes with the mats. You can use the different colors in each column.
I often use the mats with place value dice. You can get dice for different levels but I have a set of 10 dice that I just love. They are great for working on expanding form of the numbers.
You roll the three dice and then match the numbers to the correct column and then fill it in with unifix cubes. I like to match the unfix colors to the place value dice color
Because every season changes I love using erasers with these. You can use 3 types of erasers for each place value. It makes it simple and easy to use. I use the cards this time and we flipped through the cards to place the erasers on the mat. We get a lot of our erasers at Target.
We have also used counters as well. You have several colors and you can mix up the different sets.
Now if you want to have fun you can use the place value charts with the place value easy reader book and build the numbers are you read the book.
